Finksburg Boogie Woogie
Finksburg, MD
See August 23, 2001 article in The New York Times
The owner requested a solar heated, highly insulated space within an existing barn to be her home and office. The apartment's south-facing facade has sunshades that regulate the exposure of the sun to a radiant slab that functions as a thermal mass. There is a root water collection system to irrigate the garden in the barnyard. Heart-pine flooring, wainscoting, shelving, and a claw foot tub are among many materials salvaged and reused in the apartment.
The Piet Mondrian-inspired "Boogie Woogie" wall is constructed with unfinished clear yellow pine, Macrolux panels, and theater lighting gels in lightweight removable frames. These frames allow the owner to recompose the appearance of the wall as she chooses.
